The head is often played twice on the way in and out. The bass typically plays a pedal on beats 2 & 4 in bars 9-10 while the melody is played, and during the second time through bars 11-12 are usually left open for a solo break.

The harmony of this composition is a straight-ahead 12 bar Major blues with  a IImi7 - V7 turnaround. The melody contains a wealth of musical language, and is often phrased with many grace notes and approach tones. On the original recording from Study In Brown, there is a two-part horn arrangement which harmonizes the melody a minor 3rd below.

This song has been recorded over 50 times to date. It was first introduced on the Clifford Brown album Study in Brown in 1955. It has since become one of the most popular blues heads in the repertoire and it is called frequently at jam sessions.
