The harmony of this composition is very functional, albeit for the abrupt modulation up a minor 3rd in the B section. The main theme revolves around diatonic I - VI - II - V's, and the final C section begins with a II - V of IVMaj7 before a conventional IIImi - bIIIdim7 - IImi7 - V7 turnaround concludes the form.

This song has been recorded over 230 times to date. It was first introduced in the 1944 film Cover Girl by Gene Kelly and Rita Hayworth, although Martha Mears dubbed the female vocal. Many leading artists of the day were to quick to record the number from the likes of Perry Como, Bing Crosby, and Helen Forrest to name a few. It also began to find its way into the repertoire of many instrumentalists, and seminal recordings have been made by musicians such as Blue Mitchell, Kenny Drew, and Oscar Peterson. It continues to be performed and recorded frequently to this day.
