John Coltrane
Year:
1959

Debuted on the album Coltrane Jazz

The head is played in a Latin feel with the solo sections swung, typically at a comfortable medium tempo.
Form:
A-B-A (24 Bars) [8-8-8]

Eb Major
Harmony/Overview:
The harmony of this composition is unique in that it consists almost entirely of cycles using minor chords in parallel motion. The A sections use min7 chords ascending in minor 3rds, and the B section uses min7 chords descending in Major 3rds. In regard to the melody, Zita Carno states in the liner notes of Coltrane Jazz that "...[Coltrane] once heard Sonny Rollins play the little figure on which the tune is built, and he liked it so much he decided to use it in one of his own lines."
Recordings:
This composition is by no means one of Coltrane's most widely known. It was first released in 1961 on Coltrane Jazz, and it has since only been recorded about a few dozen times.
