Harmony/Overview:
The harmony of this composition is functional, revolving primarily around II - V's. The A sections begin on IMaj7 before a II - V of bVII, although instead of resolving to bVII it continues with IImi7 before a II - V of bIII. The rhythm section also typically catches the shots in the melody during the A sections, taking place on the &'s of beats 2 and 4. The first B section begins on IIImi7 before a IImi7 - V7 of bII resolves to a IImi7 - V7, and the melody here is borrowed from Tadd Dameron's "If You Could See Me Now". B2 begins identically to B1 although it uses the IIImi7 - bIIImi7 - IImi7 - V7 turnaround to return to the tonic before the end of the form with a faster harmonic rhythm.
Recordings:
This song has been recorded over 90 times. It was first introduced on the 10 inch LP Miles Davis Quartet in 1954, and Miles would go on to record it multiple times throughout his career. It continues to be performed frequently to this day and remains a jam session mainstay.
