Composer:

Charlie Parker

Year:

1947

Origin:

First recorded on a session for Savoy Records in 1947

Style:

Swing, usually played at a medium-up tempo.

Form:

12 Bar Major Blues

Key:

C Major

Harmony/Overview:

The  melody of this composition is rather sophisticated. It is made of a  bebop line that contains a fair amount of chromaticism and a wealth of  musical language, and it also manages to outline several  reharmonizations with many syncopated rhythms.

Recordings:

This  song has been recorded over 60 times to date. It was first recorded by  Charlie Parker and his All Stars on a session for Savoy records in 1947.  However, the first release release came from Kenny Clarke and His 52nd  Street Boys the following year under the title of "A La Colette". It has  since been recorded by many leading artists of generations past, and it  continues to be one of Parker's most cherished blues heads in the  standard repertoire.

JGC Top Picks:

Phineas Newborn Jr., A World of Piano, 1961

Cedar Walton, Live at Boomers, 1973

Joe Henderson, The State of the Tenor, 1985
