Joe Henderson

Year:

1969

Origin:

Introduced on the album Power to the People

Style:

Waltz, often played at a comfortable medium tempo.

Form:

A-B-C (24 Bars) [8-8-8]

Key:

Ab minor

Harmony/Overview:

The  harmony of this composition is not functional. Both the A and B  sections are modal, revolving around the Dorian mode entirely. The B  section is an exact transposition of  A, only down a whole-step. The bassline that can be heard on the  original recording during the first two sections is often used in  performances. The final C section is also not conventional, using  exclusively Maj7#11 chords that move in parallel motion.

Recordings:

This song has been recorded over 50 times to date. Joe Henderson first recorded it on his 1969 album Power to the People, and would also feature on his 1977 album Black Narcissus, as well as him 1997 album Big Band.  It continues to be performed and recorded frequently to this day and  remains as one of Joe Henderson's most popular compositions.
