The  harmony of this composition is mostly diatonic and consists of mainly  Maj7 and min7 chords. The song makes extensive use of the Lydian sound,  venturing frequently to Maj7#11 chords outside of the key, helping to  harness tension and release throughout the form.

This  song has been recorded over 50 times to date and it is one of Sam  Rivers' most well known compositions. It was first introduced on his  debut album Fuchsia Swing Song in 1965. Many notable musicians such as Joe Henderson, David Friesen, and Brad Mehldau have recorded it since.
